Deerfield H.S. Students Required to Attend "Gay" Indoctrination Panel
In the past, the word tolerance had a completely different meaning than it does today. In our modern culture, tolerance means the acceptance of all kinds of behavior. In the effort to fight so-called "intolerance," public schools have taken it upon themselves to re-educate America's children regarding social and religious issues. Such seems to be the case in Deerfield, Illinois.
Deerfield High School (DHS) District 113 is currently conducting a program where freshman students are required to attend a Gay-Straight Alliance Network panel discussion led by "gay" and "lesbian" upper classmen. According to reports, the sessions are meant to create a "tolerant" atmosphere concerning the homosexual lifestyle. School officials are defending the program, disregarding complaints from parents who believe such sexually explicit information is inappropriate for young teens.
"The school makes heterosexuality and homosexuality equivalent, and our country is deeply divided on that," said Lora Sue Hauser, a Deerfield resident and a volunteer school-issues adviser for the Illinois Family Institute. Hauser, who is also a parent, said, "You can't dump that on a 14-year-old. These are really difficult waters to navigate."
But some believe the program which supposedly promotes tolerance only tolerates one view point. Reports indicate young people who opt out of the program are often the targets of ridicule by classmates. Many feel the "freshman advisory" panel is creating problems where none existed before.
Most people are stunned to learn that students were forced to sign a "confidentiality agreement" in which the subjects of the panel discussions were supposed to be kept secret from everyone -- including parents.
Matt Barber, Policy Director for Cultural Issues with Concerned Women for America (CWA), said:This is unbelievable. It's not enough that students at Deerfield High are being exposed to improper and offensive material relative to unhealthy and high-risk homosexual behaviors, but they've essentially been told by teachers to lie to their parents about it.
This goes to the heart of the homosexual agenda. The professional propagandists in the 'gay-rights' lobby know the method all too well. If you can maintain control of undeveloped and impressionable youth and spoon-feed them misinformation, lies and half-truths about dangerous, disordered and extremely risky behaviors, then you can control the future and ensure that those behaviors are not only fully accepted, but celebrated. That's what homosexual activists from GSA are attempting to do, and that's what DHS is clearly up to as well. The superintendent of Deerfield High School Dist. 113, Dr. George Fornero, admitted requiring the students to sign the confidentiality agreement was a mistake and that the program would function under more transparency in the future. But some believe the Deerfield program is part of a larger effort by homosexual activists in the attempt to re-educate children.
"If they can't change the religious and moral beliefs parents pass on to their children, there's a simple way get around it," said Dave Smith, Executive Director of the Illinois Family Institute. "Essentially, they can use the classroom to override the values parents have instilled in their children. These are very formative and impressionable years. Peer pressure is at its greatest during this time, and educators at Deerfield High School are fully aware of this fact -- as are homosexual activists; their motives must be carefully examined."
The advisory classes are mandatory for Deerfield freshman. But, according to school officials, parents can remove their children on days the lessons concern them --even though students were sworn to keep their parents out of the loop concerning these so-called "sensitivity sessions."
Those opposed to the program took out a full page ad in the Deerfield Review, a local newspaper, demanding officials to rein in their staff and stop furthering the cause of "gay" activists. Parents who have asked to sit in on these sessions have, to date, been refused permission. Deerfield High School officials have told parents a tape of the "gay" and "lesbian" panel discussions would be made available to them in the near future.
