Minneapolis is treating Champaign, Ill.-based psychologist Dr. Michael Campion differently because of his associations as a Christian.

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. -- Christian psychologist Michael Campion--who already was suspended (and then cleared) by the Minneapolis Police Department after officials learned that he was once a board member of Illinois Family Institute--has been re-suspended by the Department.

Campion was told Tuesday that he was again suspended from his work from his contract work screening police officers. His case has attracted nationwide attention from Christians and civil liberties advocates who see his suspension as evidence of blatant anti-Christian discrimination.

After being reinstated following his widely reported suspension, Campion said he was scheduled to do a "big batch of testing" of Minneapolis police officers. Then the Department did a 180-degree turn and called to tell him that he will not be doing the testing after all.

"Dr. Campion's right to freedom of association is being sacrificed on the altar of political correctness," said David E. Smith, Executive Director of Illinois Family Institute. "This situation only underscores the danger of giving special rights to groups of people based on their sexual behavior. Does one have to embrace the homosexual activist and abortion causes to be able to exercise their First Amendment rights? Do the advocates of tolerance and diversity in Minneapolis intend to force Dr. Campion and those like him to keep their convictions to themselves?"

Gail Plewacki, spokesman for the City of Minneapolis, told IFI that the city government is not "anti-Christian," and that "we pride ourselves on being exceptionally tolerant and protective of people's rights."
Plewacki confirmed to IFI that there have been no official complaints filed against Dr. Campion on any basis, including (anti-gay) sexual bias. She said the decision was made by a department official to discontinue using Campion for testing since the city has no contract with the psychologist.
Plewacki strongly affirmed that Campion will have an equal and fair opportunity to win the bid for psychological testing arising from a government "RYP" (Request For Proposal") open to all.

"It will be a very fair process," she told IFI.

IFI Policy & Media Advisor Peter LaBarbera said the Campion situation shows that there "there is a zero sum game between homosexual activism and freedom for people of faith who oppose homosexual behavior. The liberal 'diversity' lobby is going after Mike because of his deeply-held religious and moral beliefs. In fact, no homosexual police officers have come forward with charges of bias.

"They want Mike out because he is a committed Christian who does not share their ideology," LaBarbera said. "How ironic that the forces of 'tolerance' are now leading a new assault on civil rights, this time against people of faith."

Last year, Campion was fired as a psychological screener for policemen and firefighters for the City of Springfield, Illinois following a report by a liberal newspaper of his ties to an "anti-choice and anti-gay" organization-Illinois Family Institute. Campion is now working with attorneys at the American Family Association to challenge his firing by the City of Springfield as discriminatory.

We must continue, now more than ever, to champion immutable moral principles and take a strong stand for traditional values. IFI will continue to expose the lies of the left, and speak out in favor of time-tested values and dependable conservative ideals.

Bible believing Christians and true Reagan conservatives cannot afford to run the risk of complacency while anti-God, anti-American, and anti-freedom forces work overtime toward the radical socialist agenda.
