The fossil record does not support Darwin's theory at all. For the first 3 billion years, most living things were one celled creatures, but the Cambrian explosion gave rise to most of the animal phyla that we know today in a mere 3-5 million years. Instead of one species that evolved gradually into families, then orders, then classes, then phyla over millions of years, the explosion of animal phyla in the Cambrian period turned Darwin's tree of life upside down.
Darwin's theory predicts that fish evolved into amphibians, amphibians evolved into reptiles, and reptiles evolved into mammals and birds. But the hundreds of thousands fossils of the transitional types required between these groups are missing from the fossil record. Where are they?
Darwin stated "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down, but I can find no such case". How about feathers, wings, the eyes of mammals, color vision, blood clotting, and the immune system for starters? They are all irreducibly complex and could not possibly evolve by a Darwinian process. Darwin's theory breaks down.
I worked in research for many years and when we had a theory that did not fit the data, we scrapped it and tried to come up with a new theory to explain our results. Darwin's theory does not explain the data and therefore we should recognize it for the nineteenth century claptrap that it is. It is time to start looking for a new theory to explain the diversity of living things.
